State lawmaker prepares bill to legalize medical marijuana in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - An Indiana state representative says he intends to bring legislation that would legalize medical marijuana in the state.

Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) says he intends to have the bill ready this session.

"This is something Indiana needs to take up and I give you my word, I am committed to making this happen," Lucas said.

He spoke at a committee hearing studying the pros and cons of legalizing the drug.

At least a dozen other people spoke in support of marijuana, however some people said they have concerns.

"Extremely important to employers are the objective and measurable effects marijuana has on the system, which is decreased psychomotor performance, interference with the attention span, loss of efficiency and short-term memory and cognitive impairment," said Mike Ripley with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

Lucas says he will have the bill filed by December. The legislative session starts in early January.
